Home blood cholesterol test
Home blood cholesterol test devices or kits are an important tool in determining high levels of plasma lipids, a marker of heart disease. As is widely known, coronary heart disease, a disease of the heart’s arteries, is the leading cause of death in America and most of the Western World today. High cholesterol levels play a significant role in as many as 50% of those deaths. Much of the misery and disease associated with high cholesterol can be reduced. Even though high cholesterol is a serious risk factor for heart disease, it can be modified by diet, exercise and other lifestyle modifications.
Most monitors or test kits work on the same principle, irrespective of the price, wherein a lancet device is used to prick the finger, and a single drop of blood is placed onto a test strip. The test kits or monitors can screen a patient's overall cholesterol level at home with one drop of blood within three – ten minutes depending on the model. Most monitors measure total blood cholesterol, which consists of HDL and LDL levels combined.
Below you will find a list of some of the most common home blood cholesterol tests or monitors available.

Others measure total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or "good" cholesterol. One measures low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides (blood fats).
Whatever you decide is best for you, before buying any product such as those mentioned above, consider the additional cost of the test strips, often is the case that the strips cost more than the actual device. That said home blood cholesterol tests or monitors can save you time and help you evaluate the success of lifestyle modifications.
