Physical Activity Program

home :: physical activity program

You need to be motivated to start – and stick to – a physical activity program. But finding the motivation can be one of the most difficult parts of becoming more active. Think about the things that stop you from being more active in everyday life, and have a look at the common excuses that people use below. You just might find that getting physically active is a lot easier than you first thought.

I feel too self-conscious
You don't need special equipment to go for a walk. And nobody will know that you are following your own personal physical activity program when they see you taking a walk, working in the garden, or playing ball with your children. This is a good way to start, after perhaps you can become more ambitious.

I don't have enough time
This is a very common complaint. Remember that just ten minutes of moderate intensity activity repeated often enough on a regular basis will lead to significant health benefits. Ideally you should be looking for sessions of 30-40 minutes, at least 3 times a week.

I am overweight
Start with something simple. Cycling is easy to do and is low-impact so it is easy on your joints. The same is true for walking and swimming. Remember too, that the only proven way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat sensibly and follow a regular physical activity program.

It's too expensive

A physical activity program doesn't have to be expensive. You don't need to join a gym to become healthy; you just need to put on a good pair of shoes and take a walk.

It is boring!
Exercise with a friend, or consider more social activities (exercise classes, dancing). Take up a sport you used to enjoy or take up an activity you have always wanted to try. What about in-line skating with your children?

I don't have the facilities
The only facilities you need are all around you: paths for walking and cycling; parks for ball games; stairs for climbing; gardens for gardening. If you want to try one of the most effective, enjoyable, low impact exercises try a Smooth CE Elliptical Trainer

I'm too tired
You many not believe this, but exercise gives you energy. Like a car, your body prefers to "turn over" rather than stand idle in the garage for months. Use your body regularly and it works more efficiently and you will feel livelier and more energetic.

I'm too old
Scientists have shown that even people in their eighties and nineties can improve their fitness and health once they start being regularly active. So what are you waiting for? Get started on an activity program and stick with it!
